Clinical Nutrition

Professional dietitians use up-to-date nutrition science to help clients understand the connection between food and their physical, mental and emotional health. They will support you with personalized guidance to meet your nutritional needs and goals.

Dietitians can support you throughout many phases of your life from pregnancy to eating well when you are older, as well as treating and preventing various health conditions. They collaborate with other health care providers/services such as doctors, wellness nurses, mental health nurse and traditional medicine.

What to expect:

  • Nutritional assessment to evaluate client’s needs and nutritional concerns.
  • Practical nutrition counseling and education.
  • Resources and tools according to the client’s needs.
  • Follow ups to ensure progress towards client’s health goals.

Community Nutrition

The nutrition team at KMHC is committed to promoting Traditional Foods and healthy eating through various community activities.  They also support community groups in their own food and nutrition related activities.

Goals:

  • To enhance food literacy in community members of all ages, in order to promote wellness and prevent disease.
  • Advocate for culturally-relevant community health and nutritional resources.

Sample projects:

  • Hands-on food preparation activities in the schools in order to provide exposure to healthy foods and practice food preparation skills
  • Cooking workshops in a variety of settings for different audiences to promote self efficacy with regards to healthy eating and traditional foods.
  • Presentations for various community organizations covering a wide-range of nutrition-related topics.
  • Kiosks at numerous community events to promote healthy eating and disease prevention, as well as to provide pertinent resources and tools.

Creation of up-to-date, evidence-based resources and tools for the community.

Referral process

Referral from a health care provider (doctor, nurse, physiotherapist, etc.) is preferred. Clients can also self-refer by calling the Community Health Unit Secretary.

Due to a long wait list, clients are seen according to the priority level of the reason for consult.

Appointments can be done in person or by phone.
